The Ten Gods: The Personality System Hiding Inside Every BaZi Chart

The name oversells it. The Ten Gods (十神) aren't deities, omens, or anything supernatural — they're a naming system for ten specific relationships between your Day Master and the other characters in your chart. Once you see how the naming works, it stops sounding mystical and starts looking like what it actually is: one of the more thorough personality frameworks to survive a few thousand years of use.

The two questions that generate all ten

Every other stem in a chart relates to your Day Master in exactly one of two ways: it either shares your element's cycle (same element, or the one you produce, or the one that produces you) or it crosses into a controlling relationship (the element you control, or the one that controls you). Cross that with whether the two stems share polarity — both Yang, both Yin, or opposite — and you get ten distinct combinations. Each has a name and a role:

• 比肩 / 劫财 (Friend / Rob Wealth) — same element as you. Peers, siblings, competitors, your own independence and stubbornness.
• 食神 / 伤官 (Eating God / Hurting Officer) — the element you produce. Expression, creativity, talk, output — the difference between the two is roughly "measured" (食神) versus "unfiltered" (伤官).
• 正财 / 偏财 (Direct Wealth / Indirect Wealth) — the element you control. Money, resources, and reward for effort — direct wealth from steady work, indirect wealth from opportunity, deals, and windfalls.
• 正官 / 七杀 (Direct Officer / Seven Killings) — the element that controls you. Structure, authority, rules, bosses, and pressure — the Officer version disciplined and legitimate, the Seven Killings version sharper and more adversarial.
• 正印 / 偏印 (Direct Resource / Indirect Resource) — the element that produces you. Support, learning, mentors, and where help comes from — one version conventional, the other unconventional.

Every one of the seven other characters in your chart gets classified into one of these ten, relative to your Day Master specifically. Change the Day Master, and the exact same stem in the exact same position gets a completely different label — which is the whole reason two people can share three of their four pillars and still read very differently.

Why this is more useful than "your element is Fire"

A one-line "you're a Fire person, so you're passionate" reading treats the element as the whole story. The Ten Gods framework treats the relationship as the story — not just what element sits in your chart, but what role it's playing relative to you. A chart heavy in 正官 (Direct Officer) reads as someone who works well inside structure and does better with clear rules than total freedom. The same amount of that same element showing up as 七杀 (Seven Killings) instead reads as someone who thrives under pressure but chafes against arbitrary authority — a genuinely different temperament, from what looks like a similar chart at a glance.

This is also where the traditional idea of a "clash year" gets more specific than the surface-level warning most horoscopes give it. A Fire Horse year doesn't affect everyone the same way — whether it lands as Officer, Wealth, or Output in your personal chart determines whether the year pushes on your career, your finances, or your ability to speak your mind, and those are three very different years to live through.
