Luck Pillars (大运): The Ten-Year Chapters of a BaZi Chart

The four pillars of a BaZi chart are fixed at birth. The Luck Pillars (大运, dà yùn) are not. They are a sequence of ten-year periods the chart moves through, and each one acts like a temporary fifth pillar layered on top of the natal four.

If the four pillars are the hand you were dealt, the Luck Pillars are the seasons that hand has to play through.

Where the sequence comes from

The Luck Pillars run off the month pillar. Starting from the month pillar's stem and branch, you step forward or backward through the sixty-cycle, one pillar per ten years.

• Direction depends on your sex and the polarity of your birth year. A male born in a Yang year, or a female born in a Yin year, runs the sequence forward. The other two combinations run it backward.
• Start age is set by the distance, in days, from your birth to the nearest solar-term boundary, converted at the classical rate of three days to one year. So someone born close to a term boundary might enter their first Luck Pillar at age 1; someone born mid-month might not enter it until age 8 or 9. Before that, the chart runs on a short "pre-luck" period.

How to read one

Take the Luck Pillar covering your current age and read it exactly as you would read a year — but sustained for a decade:

• Does it carry your useful element? A Luck Pillar heavy in your useful god is a supportive chapter. Effort compounds; the decade tends to be one where things build. A Luck Pillar heavy in your unfavourable element is a draining chapter — not disaster, but a decade where the same results cost more.
• Does it clash your natal branches? A Luck Pillar branch that clashes your day branch or year branch introduces a running instability for those ten years — moves, restructures, relationships tested. A Luck Pillar branch that combines with your chart does the opposite.
• Which Ten God is it? The Luck Pillar's stem has a relationship to your Day Master — wealth, output, authority, resource, or companion. That colours what the decade is about: a "wealth" Luck Pillar often coincides with a material or career-building phase; an "output" one with a productive or expressive phase; an "authority" one with responsibility, pressure, or status.

Luck Pillar plus year

The year sits inside the Luck Pillar. Both matter, and they interact.

• A supportive Luck Pillar with a draining year: a good decade having an off year. Usually manageable.
• A draining Luck Pillar with a supportive year: a hard decade getting a brief lift — worth using while it lasts.
• Both draining, or both clashing your chart: the years to be most conservative in, especially for large, hard-to-reverse commitments.

The transition between Luck Pillars — the year or two around a change of pillar — is itself often read as unsettled, regardless of whether the new pillar is favourable. The ground is shifting even if it is shifting toward something better.

What Luck Pillars are not

They are not a fate schedule. A supportive decade does not deliver outcomes on its own, and a difficult one does not prevent them. What the sequence gives you is emphasis and timing: which decade of your life the wind is likely at your back for the kind of push your chart is built for, and which decade calls for holding position rather than expanding.

Read alongside the year and the day, the Luck Pillar is the layer that keeps a BaZi reading from being static — the reason the same chart is read differently at 25, 45, and 65.
